A workshop on “Development and integration of Renewable Energies in the Mediterranean region” has taken place for two days in Algiers (24th-25th). The workshop has been organized by the Technical Committee “International exchanges of electricity” (TC3) and the Working Group “Economic Studies and Scenarios” (WG ESS) of Med-TSO (the Association of the Mediterranean Transmission System Operators –TSOs- for electricity, operating the High Voltage Transmission Networks of 18 Countries), with the support of Sonelgaz, the Algerian electricity Company. Interoperability between grids means interconnections between power generation and grids but also have an idea about how these interconnections could evolve. This is the support of the Working Group Economic Studies and Scenarios (WG ESS) to the Technical Committee “International exchanges of electricity” inside the Mediterranean projects targets. Security and Socio – economic Development in the Mediterranean strongly depend on energy and on the possibility to develop an integrated regional energy market. Energy infrastructures are key for achieving this goal, especially for what concerns the development of a reliable, secure and sustainable transmission network, capable to interconnect the countries and allow exchange of electricity and integration of new generation sources, in primis from RES.Based on multilateral cooperation as a strategical approach to regional development for facilitating the integration of the Mediterranean Power Systems, Med-TSO has received a three-year lasting grant from the EU Commission (DG NEAR) to carry out the so called “Mediterranean Project” (Feb 2015 – Jan 2018).
