Infrastructure; harmonized rules; international electricity exchanges and feasibility of interconnection projects case studies are the main features of the work carried out by the Association of the Mediterranean Transmission System Operators, Med-TSO, under a project financed by the European Commission (Directorate-General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations).

In 2015 Med-TSO obtained a three-year grant (the “Mediterranean Project”) to promote the progressive harmonization of electricity markets and cross-border electricity exchanges in the Mediterranean region, through the coordination of both national development plans and rules to access the grids. The “Mediterranean Project” also foresees the establishment of a network among Med-TSO associates for exchanging knowledge and experiences, as well as data in support of the development of regional electricity exchanges.

During the first UfM Regional Electricity Market (REM) Platform meeting, held in Barcelona on March, 7h, 2016, Med-TSO presented the results of its first year of work under the “Mediterranean Project”.

Four Technical Committees/Working Groups and two Regional Working Groups were established to perform the tasks foreseen under the project as follows:

1. Technical Committee 1 “Planning”, chaired by Mr. Carlo Sabelli, TERNA, Italy;
2. Technical Committee 2, “Regulations and Institutions”, chaired by Mr. Juan Francisco Alonso, REE, Spain;
3. Technical Committee 3 “International Electricity Exchanges” chaired by Mr. Rabah Touileb, Sonelgaz, Algeria;
4. Economic Studies and Scenarios Working Group (ESS), chaired by Mr. Raymond Ducreux, RTE, France
5. Regional WG East is chaired by Mr. Ercüment Özdemirci, TEIAS, Turkey;
6. Regional WG West is chaired by Mr. Taoufik Laabi, ONEE, Morocco.

During the meeting, Med-TSO, in cooperation with MEDREG, the Association of Mediterranean Energy Regulators, also presented its contribution to the development of the REM platform, promoted by the UfM.
